How did the Houthis just take over western Yemen in a week?
Iranian-guided drones launched by the Houthis hit Saudi Arabia's 1,200-kilometer pipeline on Thursday, and by Friday Houthi fighters had stormed the entire western coast of Yemen, including the port city of Mocha. All without firing a shot and seeing any resistance. Saudi and Yemeni government troops simply left.
The human cost is very real: over 50,000 people were displaced, and food insecurity is worsening in a country already gutted by war. The pipeline has been Saudi Arabia's insurance policy against instability in the Strait of Hormuz since the 1980s, but its mutual defense pact with Pakistan and its cozy relationship with the US were useless against the attack.
Why does a tiny volcanic island matter to the global economy?
We're talking about Perim Island, which the Houthis took in their attack. It sits in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, aka the "Gate of Tears," a passage narrower than the Strait of Hormuz and too skinny for tankers to be escorted through safely. Insurance costs to move oil through the strait have jumped from 0.25 percent of a tanker's value before the war to over 10 percent now, meaning a $100 million tanker now costs $10 million to insure instead of $250,000.
Tankers are now rerouting entirely around Africa, which means longer shipping times, higher costs, and price increases on goods most Americans don't even realize move through that strait.
What did Saudi royals do the night before losing their coast?
Nothing special. They just watched ten Chinese-built humanoid robots kickbox each other on Riyadh Boulevard.
The robots, controlled by human operators rather than autonomous AI, mostly missed each other or fell over.
